Here's what we recently gleaned from the FCC's Commercial
Licensing information as distributed by their Field Operations
Bureau, Washington DC office.
Information on FCC Commercial Radio Operator Examinations
The FCC conducts Commercial (not to be confused with amateur)
Radio Operator License examinations two times per year in most
cities with FCC offices. The FCC suggests that these
examinations only be taken for employment purposes in the Marine,
Aviation or International fixed public radio services.
The examination for the FCC General Radiotelephone Operator
License and 1st, 2nd or 3rd Class Radiotelegraph Operator's
Certificates--and/or Radar Endorsement--are held during one week,
every six months. Examinations are by appointment only--using
the FCC's required application form and a $35 application fee.
Retests are permitted after a 60-day waiting period.
The additional requirements of the Radiotelegraph license are:
* For the 1st Class Radiotelegraph license: a 20 WPM Morse code
examination consisting of character groups, and a 25 WPM
examination consisting of Morse code text, is administered.
* For the 2nd and 3rd Class Radiotelegraph licenses: a 16 WPM
Morse code examination consisting of character groups, and a 20
WPM examination consisting of Morse code text, is administered.
* Note that the Radiotelegraph Operator's Certificate is
creditable toward the Amateur Radio 20 WPM Morse code exam (if
the certificate is currently valid, or expired less than five
years).
* Each examinee must take a receiving and a sending test of
approximately five minutes in duration. To pass the examination,
one minute of error-free copy and sending must be accomplished.
The next examination period will be from August 3 through August
7, 1992, with a final application filing date of June 30, 1992.
The following examination opportunity will be approximately 6
months later (check with your local FCC Field Office for dates).
Application forms and further information can be obtained from
the FCC, Public Service Division, Radio Operator Branch,
Washington, DC 20554-1410; or by calling them at 202-632-7240.
